When the band does incorporate thrash metal, it's usually unsubtly jammed in as a bridge to resuscitate an otherwise flatlining song. If Risk was a cynical, corny and often irritating coda to the band's initial breakup, The World Apparently marketed as a response to the "alternative" stylings of Riskthis album nevertheless continues to dick around with different genres, thrash metal again an afterthought to radio-readiness.Įlements of heavy metal, groove, grunge, hard rock and prog rock are all called upon in this dire experiment, as the band continued to lose coherence. Their push for a "hit" release at any cost started out rather well with the neatly-packaged Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasiabut the quality of Mustaine's ideas and his self-awareness went into freefall from Cryptic Writings onwards. Their ninth album overall, The World Needs A Hero represents the final stage of Megadeth's 10 year neutering following the untouchable Rust In Peacesurpassing Risk as the most embarrassing album in the band's catalogue. I put it very rarely and even then I often find myself unable to last beyond a few tracks easily skippable.

There are flashes of what could of been scattered throughout this album "Promises", "Disconnect" and the aforementioned "Warhorse" but that's it. It sounds stilted, sure it's all technically correct but it doesn't stir any response from me. The solos seem somewhat muted, which given songs like "Return to Hanger" are built around them, rob them of what chance they had to grab your attention. The production does seem to push everything to the background, there are no cutting guitars to jump out at you to push a song along. The chorus to "Burning Bridges" honestly sounds like Mustaine is temporarily possessed, if you manage not to cringe then you clearly weren't listening.Īs for "Recipe for Hate Warhorse", what I can only imagine was an attempt to come off as epic ends up falling on it's face the song sounds like a jam with spoken word passages until the drums kick in and the song takes off. While this album does have it's good moments, the tempo changes in "Burning Bridges" and "Warhorse" kick ass but require sitting through otherwise awful tracks to get to them. This album swings from radio rock songs ala the title track to slow boring tracks that drag on for way too long like in "Burning Bridges". While it's understandable that Megadeth failed at a pop rock album as they were a fish out of water failing at what tries to be a return to form the Countdown era anyway is worse. This album here is the real nadir of Megadeth, not Risk as most people think. Best viewed without Internet Explorer, in x resolution or higher.
